61, Bail without jail

Made for each other, jail and bail seem to be the twins separated at birth. Though these don't co-exist, each is incomplete without the other. Even the most courageous man, who may not need any weapon, cannot do without a bail. The institution of bail has kept lawyers gainfully engaged. On a lighter vein, a lawyer would argue: we firmly believe that under the law every person is considered innocent until proven unable to pay us back'.

Now out on bail, Dominique Strauss-Kahn or DSK has been one such powerful person who couldn't do without it. Arrested recently on charges of sexual assault on a chambermaid in his New York Hotel, the then head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)had to face a jail term. Though yet to be proven inncocent, DSK has nevertheless been helped in his bail by an army of lawyers!

Powerless men and men-in-power throughout modern history have had equal opportunity of going to jail, and being on bail later. That countries will face jail could never be imagined. It is only recently that Greece has been bailed out, for raping its citizens of vital monetary resources. No jail for such heinous crime though, it has been bail without jail....
